Three Cheers For the Nanny State
Aidan Southwick In the case of this article’s perspective, government intervention is absolutely necessary at times because it may keep Americans from acting foolishly even if acting foolish makes them happy. I don’t disagree that there should be some government intervention at certain times, but I do think that the government intervenes too often. One of the points that the article brought up is that a bunch of fat ass Americans drink too much god damn soda. The government intervened because they were concerned about citizen’s health so they made it harder to get large volumes of soda. Or, the government wanted to pull more profit out of the soda industry, but that’s just my theory. Often times I see too much intervention from the government. For example, the I.R.S. Not only is it stressful and seemingly unnecessary for the I.R.S. to search your records, but they can also legally come into your home and search your computer and filing cabinets just to find that you claimed your car as a company vehicle so that you could get a tax write off. Bullshit. The biggest problems facing this nation through a politicians eyes are Immigration, foreign policy, abortion, climate change, economy, gay marriage, and education. As someone who falls in between democrat and republican on the political spectrum, I would argue that Our economy is one of the concerning issues facing America. America is among the most in debt countries in the world. The stock market is said to plummet to the lowest it's been since the depression in this next month.
The second most troubling issue in my opinion is our nation's foreign policy. It is being considered that there should be no U.S. involvement in the Middle East. This topic ties into economy because our nation is already in debt (partially due to G.W. Bush's expense on the Iraq war) and we as a nation want to cut our budget on the war against Isis. While I think that our economy is essential to the health of America, I also want to act morally and intervene in the Middle East because it will show terrorism that this country will not be moved, we will not stand for dehumanization of innocents, we won't give an inch to extremists in other countries, and furthermore, we won't give an inch to extremists on our own soil. The third topic that I find relevant facing not only America but the entire globe is climate change. Our carbon emissions are through the roof, or should I say the atmosphere and there hasn't been a significant consideration given to this issue. I'm not an expert on climate change however I know that there are plenty of brilliant minds who are familiar with this topic that are being under utilized. Now I want to address the elephant in the room- presidential candidate Donald Trump. (pun intended) He is the one who looks like a pumpkin with a bleach blonde hair piece. He's the easiest to spot in a room filled with well groomed, over tan republicans with weaves. At one point in the debate, Trump said that vaccines caused autism, and for me being an autistic individual, I find it funny that he is a forerunner in the campaign. Towards the end of the debate, everyone was asked what their presidential nickname would be. Trump replied, "Humble." Then I chuckled to my self and thought, why not jackolantern, or oompa loompa? Blog Post 2 1. During these debates, there are no real winners, especially since after the program they don't announce the MVP and if they did, they would be deemed the MVPOS. 2. More than half of this debate was political theater. This nation has too many problems that are deeper and more complex than a few of the major topics because these topics are what America's voting population is interested in- war, debt, gay marriage, and abortion. How many people would be interested in watching 3 hours of debate about retirement and the interest on a U.S. credit card? Now let me rephrase the question, if you heard to debates occurring simultaneously, one about conflict in the middle east, the other about retirement, which one are you going to watch? Or how about each candidate speaking their true opinion when asked a question instead of seamlessly slipping red herrings and fallacies and everything that every civilian in the third Reich got riled to? "Our nation is the greatest nation in the world" is what wins both the attention and votes. Women in Politics One Issue that is becoming prevalent in the world of politics is that women are being underrepresented in politics according to the Huffington Post. The article states that most women find it difficult to become involved with politics because their family is too dependent on them, especially the women with kids under the age of 7. This doesn't sound like some sort of generalization or stereotype against women since it's true that women have a lot more problems than men which I won't go into, but let's say pregnancy for example. Pregnancy requires a lot of time and a stress free environment. In fact, Most women that were surveyed said that family was an issue for them when it came to giving a lot of their time to a field like politics. On the other hand, I could care less because I think that politicians are snakes that get over paid, slander other politicians, then get looked up to because everyone thinks that their performing a noble act. No one thinks about being a politician when their seven and just got asked "what would your dream job be."
Now that that's been said I'm thinking that this is a good thing, we should keep as many people out of politics as possible. |
