Africa Geographical Quiz
Before Sarah F. D. (previous humanities teacher) moved to Denver, she taught different subject areas about Africa. One of the last things she assigned was a geographical quiz for the continent of Africa. To help us learn the countries, she recommended an education site called Shepard Software. The site seemed elementary but it was an effective way of learning the countries. After countless times of using this site, I knew every country off the top of my head and I'm sure almost everyone else did too. I chose the challenge extension which was basically a more difficult version of the original quiz. I breezed through it with 100% of the answers correct. By now I'm sure that I've forgotten a lot of these countries.
One thing that I liked was the content that we learned that doesn't have anything to do with the united states. One thing that I disliked was the overkill of content about Africa. Sarah always had a different subject to learn about Africa after we finished the previous one. One thing that
I learned was the completely knew knowledge about a new country.

Place of Slaughter
This piece was a short story based on a true series of events taking place in Uganda between 1896 and 1899 when an engineer travels to Tsavo to build a bridge for the Uganda railway to connect Uganda with Kenya, The drawback being the man eaters of Tsavo.
The main character in this story is named Abasi, who is a member of a Swahili tribe that is forced to go to Tsavo by the British to help build the bridge. He faces the same drawback and his friends face the same fate as dozens of workers in 1886.
One thing that I liked about this piece was the fiction that was added to the historical non-fiction and adding a new perspective on this true event. One thing that I disliked was the limit on the creative control since I had to make most parts of the story historically accurate, therefore, the story couldn't have gone exactly as I wanted it. In addition to teaching some people about this event, I learned even more interesting facts about this event than I did before.

Globalization Op Ed
For my globalization op ed, I chose to write a paper about how McDonald's is Americanizing other countries and globalizing the fast food industry. I included the Americanization of other countries, false advertising, targeted marketing, health and obesity, nutritional criteria, cheap product, suppliers and GMOs, and corporal power/control.
To go with this piece, there was also a political cartoon that was hand sketched in order to visually and metaphorically deliver the message.
My political cartoon displayed a conveyor belt pulling a culturally diverse child through a McDonald's "Happy meal" box. On the other side of the box, there's a child who has already been through the conveyor belt and he appears to be obese and happy with American apparel such as a T-shirt with the American flag design, blue jeans, and a baseball cap with an eagle logo. This image is a metaphor for the Americanization concept of this op ed.

Poetry Project
The last and most recent project that we've done in sophomore year is poetry. We were asked to write a poem on peace, war, or truth. Some people differed slightly from this objective although I realize that when people are given more creative control, the completed piece of work will be better than a finished product that an individual can't relate to.
My poem was about perseverance, not just through hard times but throughout life. This was inspired by my realization of how accomplished I feel once I suffer through difficult areas and how relieved I feel once I'm done.
This was a challenge to me because I'm not a fan of poetry and it's hard for me to be poetic because I'm the kind of person who explains things how I see them. In short, straight forward.
I decided to do this project in video form. I chose to do this because I knew that if I just recorded my voice with a few pictures and sound effects, I wouldn't risk forgetting my poem in front of a live audience. The second reason I chose video form was because I was interested in making a movie clip and editing it. This allowed me to be more creative with pictures, sound effects, voiceovers, and editing. It was also harder in a way because I had a difficult time with some of the video editing. Because I chose this, I now have more experience with my own laptop. Working on this project will make me more prepared for future projects that require this field of tech.

Op Ed analyzation
Earlier in the year, we were assigned to analyze an eight page op ed (opposite the editorial page, commonly confused with opinion editorial) on the views of certain globalization perspectives. The one we analyzed was titled "Jihad vs. Mcworld." It took some analyzing of this text to understand the metaphor of the title. The title symbolizes Mcworld being McDonald's, Macintosh, and other globalized 'Mc' trademarks that want to advance and expand upon future change versus the jihad metaphor symbolizing the countries that boycott any form of globalization including third world countries where it would be impossible to find common products of global brands and logos.
We also read an op ed called "the Lexus and the Olive tree discussing the political standpoints of NATO and other politicians during the Cold War. These op eds lead to every student of every period creating their own op ed revolving around globalization including a hand sketched and revised political cartoon as a visual to convey the message of their text. (See details about my op ed further up the page.)
One thing that I liked about this project was the faith that was put into our class to analyze an advanced text. One thing that I disliked was the amount of content that was given and not only read, but thoroughly analyzed and annotated. One thing that I learned was increased knowledge about the cold war, sweatshops, and globalization.
